How to Repair Leather Car Seats

Repair Leather Car SeatsWhen it comes to car seats, leather is a top choice for many reasons. For one, nothing looks as great as leather. From the sleek qualities to the clean appeal, leather looks phenomenal. But just like many things in life, mistakes happen. From spills to rips, leather car seats are prone to damage. But luckily, there are many proven tips on how to repair the leather seats in your vehicle.

In this post, we’ll dive into some tips on how to repair leather car seats, and we’ll even point you in the direction of a trusted auto shop that can help with all of your car care needs.

Step One: Buy a Repair Kit

In order to have the best results when it comes to a repair job, then your best bet is to purchase a leather repair kit. These kits come with everything you need to tackle this job properly. However, you want to ensure that you buy a repair kit with a colorant that matches your type of leather. To have the best shot at finding the right repair kit, contact your vehicle manufacturer. If you have no luck, then there are many other options out there that can give you the proper color match.

Step Two: Clean the Surrounding Area

The next step involves cleaning the area around the leather damage. To do this effectively, choose a mild soap, get a damp rag, then clean the leather. You’ll want to remove crumbs, clean dirt, and scrub away grime to the best of your ability. Before proceeding to the next step, you’ll want the area to dry completely.

Step Three: Trim Around the Tear

The next step involves more cleaning around the tear. Try to locate any threads or edges that are curling outward from the tear, then cut them off with a pair of scissors. This is a very intricate step, so be sure to be careful so you don’t cut off too much or too little.

Step Four: Glue the Cloth

The next step is to grab your canvas backing cloth from your repair kit, place it underneath the tear, and glue it into place. To do this effectively, slip a small piece of the cloth into the hole, then slide it under the tear. Use the glue that also came with the kit and place a small amount on the edges of the tear in order for it to stick to the cloth. After your application, you’ll want the area to completely dry.

Step Five: Use the Leather Filler

You’ll then want to head over to your repair kit and grab the leather filler. Using a palette knife, spread the filler onto the backing cloth that is located between the edges of the tear. To do this effectively, you’ll want every layer to dry before proceeding to the next layer. You’ll want to continue to build up the filler until there is a slight overlap on the leather seat.

Step Six: Get Out the Sander

Once the filler has dried completely, you’ll then want to use a fine-grit sanding block to sand down the top layer. Once the filler is even with the leather, then stop sanding. An added tip with this step is to try your best to not sand down too much, as it can do damage to your leather.

Step Seven: Wipe Down

Next, you’ll want to use a slightly damp cloth to clean the area. During the sanding process, this can move around a lot of dust and debris, so you’ll want to clean all of this up before proceeding. After you clean the area properly, you’ll want the area to dry completely before moving onto the next step.

Step Eight: Apply Colorant

This next step is to grab a clean cloth to rub the colorant onto the area where the filler was applied. If necessary, build up several layers, but be sure to let each layer dry completely before moving onto the next layer. Stop the process once you find a layer that matches the surrounding leather.

Step Nine: Add Leather Sealant

The last and final step is to add the leather sealant from your kit. Be sure to use a clean cloth and use it to apply the sealant to the area you repaired. This helps to protect the colorant you applied. Before sitting on the seat, be sure to let the sealant dry completely.
