BMW vs Lexus
For decades, both Lexus and BMW have changed the landscape of luxury vehicles. Over the years, there has been much debate over which is the superior premium vehicle brand. Based on factors such as dependability and aesthetics, many people have different opinions when it comes to which brand they prefer. If you’re looking to purchase one of these vehicles, then you may be torn on which is the better option. By the end of this blog, you should have more clarity on which brand is best suited to your needs.
In this post, we’ll compare BMW and Lexus in terms of reliability, safety, performance, and more. (All data comes from 2019 rankings developed by U.S. News & World Report.)
When it comes to reliability, the Lexus and BMW are very comparable. However, Lexus just barely tops BMW when it comes to the most reliable vehicle brand. The Lexus LS came out on top as the more reliable car in the bunch; however, it's important to note that two Lexus models also had the two lowest scores on the list. The other vehicles made from both automakers all had a reliability score of 3.5 or 4 out of 5.
When it comes to safety, both automakers sit tied at 9.68 out of 10. However, since many models don’t even go through crash testing at all, safety ratings can be hard to judge. For vehicles that have been crash tested by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), both vehicle brands were very successful. In fact, all safety scores from U.S. News for both brands ended up in the range of 9.3 and 10 (on a 10-point scale). One reason why these scores are so high is that both automakers have highly advanced driver assistance technology. In addition, it’s important to note that Lexus continues to produce vehicles built with more standard safety equipment compared to other brands.
On the performance end of the spectrum, both brands finished very close, once again. However, BMW gets the edge with a score of 8.69 out of 10; Lexus finished with a score of 8.1. The luxury sports car from Lexus, the Lexus LC, finished with the highest score when it comes to performance. While it finished with a remarkable score of 9.2, all other Lexus models also had high scores between 7.2 and 8.4. On the other hand, BMW offers tons of vehicles with extremely high performance ratings. In fact, many of them were rated around 9 out of 10. However, there were a few low-scoring options from BMW, which brought their overall rating down. The top picks as the leading performance vehicles for BMW go to the 2 Series and X5.
When comparing any vehicle, you can’t forget about the price. In fact, price is a determining factor for many car-seekers. As for what vehicle brand resulted in the lowest prices, Lexus takes the cake. This was determined by taking the average starting prices from all the vehicles carried by both automakers. It's Important to note that there was one outlier that we didn’t include in the list: the BMW i8, which sits at a price tag of $147,500. That being said, the average starting price of BMW vehicles is around $58,000 compared to around $52,800 for Lexus vehicles.
Another notable pricier option for BMW is the 7 Series, which will cost you around $83,000. For Lexus, the LC and LX are their highest-priced models. The LC will run you around $92,000, and the LX starts at around $85,500. For more cost-effective options, BMW offers the 2 Series, 3 Series, and X1, which all start under $35,000. For Lexus vehicles, their UX has a starting price of only $32,000.
As for interiors, both Lexus and BMW failed to make the U.S. News top 10 list for the car brands with the best interiors. However, the scores were still relatively high. The average score for BMW was 8.07, while Lexus had a score of 7.66. Some specific vehicles that resulted in higher scores were the Lexus LS and LC, both with scores at around 8.5. Some notable high scores for BMW were the 7 Series at a score of 8.8, 5 Series at 8.7, and the X1 at 8.4. We give the edge to BMW when it comes to interiors.
